Summary: Where the Sidewalk Ends was published in 1974 and continues to be one of the most well-known children’s poetry books. Written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends is a collection of poems that reflect on childhood and remind the reader of their sense of wonder. With stories of sisters being auctioned and a secret world between sidewalks and streets, Silverstein immerses his readers in the joy of being young again. The focus of this collection of poems is not to change the world or inspire perspectives but rather, to “Put something silly in the world that ain't been there before.”
Genre: This book is a collection of poems.
Reading the Novel: This book would do very well in a classroom library as well as a class read. The poems are written about childhood experiences that many of our students can relate to and find solace in.
Teaching the Novel: I would use this novel, obviously, to teach poetry. However, using Shel Silverstein’s works makes poetry more digestible for younger students. Poetry can be daunting to understand but since this collection is written for children, students will have an easier time understanding.
