Summary: Pippa “Pip” Fitz Amobi has always been a good girl. In the summer before her senior year she embarks on her capstone project in which she has decided to prove Salil Singh innocent after he had been accused of murdering a local girl 5 years prior. With the help of Sal’s little brother, Ravi, Pip falls down a rabbit hole of lies and mystery as she puts herself in the direct path of the true killer. Will Pip find the true killer through a series of interviews and undercover slueths?
Genre: This novel falls into the fiction category as it is written about a fictional character, Pip, and her effort to unveil a murderer. I would also argue this could fall into the contemporary realistic category as it discusses some harsh themes such as suicide.
Reading the Novel: This novel would be a great class library book. The story is engaging and fast-paced, so it will easily pull a student into the mystery. This book could be used as a class read as the themes throughout the book revolve around friendship and not judging a book by its cover, but I think it would fare better as a library book.
Teaching the Novel: Like The Inheritance Games, this book could be cool to use when talking about context clues and how to use the information given to make inferences about the true meaning of the text. You could ask the students to be like Pip and piece parts of the story together to find out what the author’s message is.
