Summary: In this thrilling mystery novel the reader follows Avery Kylie Grambs into a world of fortune and mystery. When Tobias Hawthorne, a world-known billionaire, leaves his fortune to Avery even though she has never met him, Avery is thrown into the notorious Hawthorne House. For Avery to inherit his fortune she must live in the house with the family Tobias disinherited and learn the way of the world for a young billionaire. With the help of Tobias’ four grandsons, Grayson, Nash, Xander, and Jameson, Avery unravels the dark web Tobias left behind. Will Avery make it out of Hawthorne House alive or will the secrets buried deep within swallow her whole? If life is a game then, “The only thing we get to decide in this life is if we play to win” (Barnes, 2022). Students will fall into the mysterious world of the Hawthorne family and work alongside Avery in her pursuit of the truth.
Genre: This novel is considered fiction as it is based on fictional people and events.
Reading the Novel: I would have this novel in a student library as it is an engaging read that I believe most students would love to pick up.
Teaching the Novel: Teaching this novel independently may be difficult as it is not written with the intent of discussing morality per se, but it could work alongside dissecting clues to find the bigger picture. I would use this novel when discussing using context clues and maybe turn it into a scavenger hunt to find the main theme of the passage.
