Summary: Enrique’s journey tells the true heartbreaking story of a young man on his journey to immigrate to the United States. The journalistic approach of this book tells the story of all of the brutality and pain that it brings. This story is not only Enrique’s but the story of thousands of immigrants in search of a better life. Enrique’s journey to find his mother demonstrates the resilience of Enrique and all those who came before him. Author Sonia Nazario highlights the harsh reality that most migrants face in pursuit of the “American Dream.” As Enrique’s mother said, “La muerte nunca te avisa cuando viene” or “Death never announces when it is going to come.” (Nazario, 2014). Although this book discusses mature themes it presents an incredible opportunity for students to understand the full struggle so many must go through all for the love of their family.
Genre: This book is classified as non-fiction. It is written in a journalistic style by journalist Sonia Nazario. It follows the true story of a boy who immigrated to the United States in one of the most difficult ways possible.
Reading the Novel: This novel could be in a class library if there were trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. This book does have mature themes and difficult situations to read, so I would recommend this book to students only with permission from parents and a discussion beforehand.
Teaching the Novel: This novel would be so helpful in a history class when talking about immigration. Pulling excerpts from the book to showcase real-life accounts of the perilous journey will help students fully grasp what people they may know have gone through in search of a better life.
