Summary: The story of Malala Yousafzai took over the world. Malala was raised in Swat, Pakistan, and differed from girls her age in many ways. Her father was her biggest supporter and fought for her to grow up educated. Throughout all of the difficulties many have had the privilege of not having to face including a Taliban takeover and natural disasters, Malala continued to be a voice for education. As her activism began to spread, she was instantly made a target and was subsequently shot on October 9, 2012. Miraculously, she survived and advocated for young women to receive an education. I Am Malala is a self-written biography of the incredible life and determination Malala has shown. Despite the oppression she still faces Malala says, “I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through not only educating our minds but our hearts and our souls” (Yousafzai & Lamb, 2016).

Genre: This novel is a non-fiction biography written about the real life of Malala Yousafzai. This could also be classified into the diverse characters group.

Reading the Novel: I would love to read this book with a class as I think it would provide a different perspective on something we tend to take for granted. I would also have this in a class library for students to pick up on their own.

Teaching the Novel: There are so many things that we can learn from Malala including perseverance, bravery, and not taking education for granted. Most of our students will not see the importance of education, I know I didn’t when I was younger. Using Malala’s story to help them understand what a privilege it is to freely go to school and acquire knowledge without fear of persecution could be eye-opening for many students.
