Title: Hey Kiddo
Author: Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Genre: Non-fiction
# of pages: 320
Reading Level: HL510L, 13-17 years
Summary: Hey Kiddo is the story of Jarrett and his untraditional family. Written by Jarrett himself, this graphic novel delves into a life that most are privileged to not experience. The reader follows Jarrett as he meets his father, loses his mother, and finds his passion for life. Hey Kiddo serves as an inspiration for anyone who did not have the “perfect” family we are so often advertised, and is a reminder that, “...the beautiful thing about growing up is that you get to create your own reality and your own family” (Krosoczka, 2019).

Genre: Hey Kiddo is classified as a non-fiction graphic novel as it tells the true story of its author.
Reading the Novel: I believe Hey Kiddo would be best if held in a classroom library. The content in the story can be mature such as drug use and harsh language, however, Hey Kiddo has real potential to help a student who may be living a life similar to Jarrett’s.
Teaching the Novel: The main two themes this novel can unearth are acceptance and resilience. A student who has not experienced what Jarrett has can learn that not every child has the same privileges and the importance of being accepting regardless of anyone’s background. For students who have felt similar feelings as Jarrett, this novel shows them that they can succeed despite their hardships.
